Safeguarding and child protection standards for the voluntary and community sector

Publication date September 2019

Standards and guidance for children and young people aged 0-18

This set of recommended standards and accompanying guidance will help non-statutory organisations in the UK that work with children and young people up to the age of 18 to put clear safeguarding arrangements in place.

They are aimed at voluntary, community and faith organisations and groups. They may also be helpful for others working with children and young people such as social enterprises, not-for-profit organisations and small enterprises.

This new version updates and replaces the previous standards and guidance published in 2017.

Overview of standards

The Standards help organisations take responsibility for keeping children and young people safe, minimise risk and comply with legislation and national guidance. They offer a realistic and practical approach, providing useful templates, examples and links to further information.

Groups and organisations that have not yet put safeguarding measures in place, or who need to review these, should first refer to the Introductory guide to safeguarding and child protection for the voluntary and community sector. The Standards are also designed to be used alongside our self-assessment tool.

The Standards cover the following safeguarding areas:

  • safer staff and volunteers
  • child protection and protecting young adults at risk
  • preventing and responding to bullying
  • avoiding accidents and running safe activities and events
  • recording and storing information
  • sharing information and working with other agencies.
