About the information service

Sharing knowledge to protect children in the UK

Our Knowledge and Information Service provides free, quick and easy access to the latest information, guidance and research to help you keep children and young people safe.

We find and share research, guidance and best practice to help you develop safeguarding policies and procedures, make evidence-based decisions to support children, and refresh or improve your child protection knowledge.

Our information specialists can undertake literature searches, produce tailored reading lists, help you develop search strategies to get the most out of our library database, or answer questions on specific safeguarding topics.

How we can help

How we can help

The NSPCC Knowledge and Information Service help people working or volunteering with children and young people by:

  • producing information, briefings and summaries of research which are all available on NSPCC Learning
  • compiling email alerts to keep you up-to-date with the latest evidence, policy, research and practice on child protection and related subjects
  • indexing and abstracting new publications and resources in our free-to-access library catalogue
  • finding the answers to your questions by searching databases, compiling reading lists and drawing upon NSPCC expertise
  • helping visitors to access books and journals when they are visiting the NSPCC Library, based in London.

We answer over a thousand enquiries a year. Below are some examples of the type of queries we can help with.

  • Does my organisation need to have a safeguarding policy?
  • Is there any guidance on safeguarding young people on overnight trips?
  • How can we keep children safe while delivering an online class?
  • Can you help me find evidence on what works in supporting children displaying harmful sexual behaviour?
  • How many children in the UK were abused last year?
  • Can you identify recent serious case reviews which involve child neglect?
