Navigating puberty and sexual development

Resources for parents and carers of children and young people who have a learning disability

Publication date January 2026

Children and young people who have a learning disability can experience increased challenges before or during puberty, from understanding the changes in their bodies to expressing their feelings and managing the difference between public and private behaviours.

We've produced a set of resources parents and carers can use to explore bodies, behaviours and puberty with children and young people.

There are two guides, sharing advice, guidance and practical tips and a series of symbolised booklets.

There are two guides for adults:

  • navigating puberty
  • humping and thrusting behaviour.

There is a series of symbolised booklets on:

  • body hair
  • breasts
  • erections
  • masturbation
  • my body
  • periods
  • private parts
  • sweating and body odour
  • wet dreams.
