Take a look back at the resources, research and training we’ve produced in 2024 to support you in protecting children and young people.
Making resources easier for you to find
We launched four new resource areas, collating safeguarding guidance and support so you can easily find vital information:
- online safety
- supporting children who have additional needs and disabilities
- mental health
- early years.
Podcast
Our podcast continues to support all sectors with in-depth discussions on a range of topics, including our latest on how to plan meaningful participation work with victims and survivors of child sexual abuse (CSA). Natalie Dormer, Childline ambassador and actor guest hosted an episode discussing sex and relationships education and Anne Longfield, the Executive Chair of the Centre for Young Lives discussed what needs to be done to improve the safeguarding support available for teenagers in the UK.
Research and resources
NSPCC Learning constantly evaluates its services and works to improve and share what we do. In 2024 we published over 20 reports and briefings including:
- research from Together for Childhood, an evidence-informed approach bringing together local partnerships and families. Reports looked what young people know, think and do about child abuse and experiences of early pregnancy support in Scotland
- six Why Language matters blogs aiming to improve the language we use when talking about safeguarding issues such as the importance of using child-led language when talking about children who have disabilities
- a series of practice points to help professionals understand children's experiences, identify risk factors and better respond to their needs. The resources include four expert insight films to help social workers
- six Helplines insights briefings, bringing together data from Helpline contacts and Childline sessions, to highlight key issues in child protection and the impact on children and families. Our latest briefing focuses on the financial pressures on young people.
Elearning
We’ve continued to update our courses to ensure they meet changes in guidance and legislation. We also:
- refreshed our safeguarding training for schools, academies and colleges to include innovative branching scenarios which allows users to explore interactive scenarios for primary, secondary and college settings
- launched our safeguarding young people and young adults training course with updated content on apprentices, new videos and content to make this 4-nation compliant
- shared our work with the Gas Distribution Network, showcasing how our 15-minute elearning course can build safeguarding knowledge to help support vulnerable children and families.
Training and consultancy
Throughout 2024 our team helped to develop and deliver a range of child protection training courses including:
- monthly twilight webinars for schools delivering bite-size safeguarding information and guidance on a range of child protection issues
- new designated safeguarding lead training, to help support school staff in England who are new to the role or need to refresh their knowledge
