Briefing on what schools in England must and should deliver from 2020

The Department for Education (DfE) has published statutory guidance about how Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education should be implemented in all schools across England by 2020 (DfE, 2019a). Schools are encouraged to implement the new curriculum from September 2019.

Background

The guidance has been produced following a consultation which gathered opinions from a variety of sources including parents and family members, young people, head teachers, school governors and other education professionals and organisations.

The DfE recognises the need for teachers in to be trained to deliver high quality Relationships Education, RSE and Health Education, and is committed to supporting state funded schools to deliver teaching around these subjects in a coordinated and coherent way across the curriculum (DfE, 2019b).
